Building Communities, Empowering Futures: Together, We Make a Difference

Community Involvement

Join us in our mission to make a difference in Southeast Iowa. Whether you're a skilled tradesperson, a concerned citizen, or a business owner looking to give back, there's a place for you in our vibrant community of volunteers. Together, we can build a stronger, more inclusive society where everyone has the opportunity to thrive. Let's roll up our sleeves, lend a helping hand, and create positive change that reverberates throughout generations to come.

Supporting Pro Labor Candidates

At the Southeast Iowa Building Trades Council, we staunchly advocate for the rights and interests of workers in our region. Central to this commitment is our unwavering support for pro-labor candidates who share our vision of fair wages, safe working conditions, and robust worker protections. We believe that electing leaders who prioritize the needs of working families is essential for creating a thriving economy and a just society. Through strategic endorsements, grassroots mobilization, and civic engagement, we strive to empower candidates who champion the values of the working class and are dedicated to advancing policies that uplift our communities. Join us in our mission to ensure that the voices of workers are heard and respected in the halls of power, as we work together to build a brighter future for all.

Scholarships

We are dedicated to investing in the future of our community through education and opportunity. Our scholarship program stands as a testament to our commitment to empowering the next generation of skilled workers and leaders. By providing financial support to deserving students pursuing careers in the trades, we aim to foster excellence, innovation, and progress in Southeast Iowa.

Working with Local Officials & Leaders

The Southeast Iowa Building Trades strives to work with our local elected officials and local business leaders to make sure the best interests of local skilled tradesmen and women are advanced and protected. Too many times we see the local benefits of Economic Development lost through the construction phase when it is awarded to an out of town contractor that refuses to hire local workers. We as a community only benefit from these projects when local workers, paid at a fair wage with benefits, are used in the construction of local projects. By working with the customer to make sure an emphasis is placed on the contractors bidding on the project to use local tradesmen and women makes all the difference to our community.

We as the building trades also work with local officials to encourage the use of Responsible Bidders Ordnances (RBO’s) on construction projects to ensure the lowest responsible bidder is awarded the contract. Whether you are a local business looking to expand or a local municipality investing tax dollars into infrastructure, the customer expects their project to be built with quality workmanship that will stand the test of time. The best way to ensure a quality product is delivered is through the use of trained workers who can pass on the skills and techniques acquired over their career to the next generation. RBO’s ensure that all contractors that bidding on the project is held to the same standard and evaluation process. It also allows the municipality to include items that are important to them, such as Drug Testing policy, participation in a Department of Labor approved training program, etc. All these help ensure the taxpayers get the most value for their dollars spent.

We as the building trades also work to advance the use of Apprenticeship training programs in the local construction industry to help the next generation of skilled workers acquire the skills and safety training required to deliver a quality product.

Volunteer Community Work

The Southeast Iowa Building Trades works with local community groups to volunteer and put our tradesmen and women’s skills to good use. We recently helped with the Burlington Habitat House, among other things. If you have a project that benefits the community or group, contact us and let’s talk about ways we can help.

Are you a tradesman or woman that would like to help with the councils current projects? Contact us and find out when and where we will be at. Another great way to stay in touch and see the council’s work is to check out our facebook page.
