Registered Apprenticeship is a career training program where you earn while you learn the skilled profession of a Union  Construction worker. The “Earn and Learn” training model of Registered Apprenticeship provides a unique combination of structured learning with on-the-job training from an assigned Journeyperson. Related instruction, technical training or  other certified training is provided by our apprenticeship training centers.

The Trades

Boilermakers

Union Boilermakers are skilled tradespeople who specialize in the fabrication, installation, maintenance, and repair of boilers, pressure vessels, and other large metal structures. They work in various industries, including power generation, petrochemical, refining, and manufacturing, where boilers are essential for heating, processing, and producing steam. Union Boilermakers are trained in welding, metalworking, and blueprint reading to construct and assemble boiler components according to precise specifications and safety standards. They also perform inspections, tests, and routine maintenance to ensure the safe and efficient operation of boilers and related equipment. With their expertise and dedication to quality craftsmanship, Union Boilermakers play a critical role in supporting industrial operations and infrastructure.

Applications are available online for all Boilermaker Local Lodges in the Southeastern Apprenticeship Area and are accepted year-round.

Carpenters

Union Carpenters are highly skilled craftsmen specializing in the construction, installation, and repair of wooden structures and building components. They work with a variety of materials, including lumber, plywood, and composite materials, to frame walls, floors, roofs, and other structural elements of buildings. Union Carpenters also install doors, windows, cabinets, and trim work, as well as perform finishing tasks such as sanding, staining, and painting. With their expertise in carpentry techniques and building codes, Union Carpenters ensure that projects are completed safely, accurately, and to the highest standards of quality. They play a vital role in the construction and renovation of residential, commercial, and industrial properties across Iowa, contributing to the growth and development of our communities.

Union Electrical Workers, also known as electricians, are skilled professionals responsible for the installation, maintenance, and repair of electrical systems in buildings, infrastructure, and industrial facilities. With their expertise, Union Glaziers contribute to the construction and renovation of commercial, residential, and institutional projects.

Union Insulators are skilled tradespeople specializing in the installation, maintenance, and repair of insulation systems in various industrial and commercial settings. Union Insulators play a critical role in ensuring the energy efficiency, comfort, and safety of structures by applying insulation to pipes, ducts, boilers, tanks, and other components. Operators

Union Operating Engineers are integral to the construction industry, specializing in the operation and maintenance of heavy equipment and machinery. They are responsible for operating a variety of equipment, including bulldozers, excavators, cranes, and loaders, to move materials, excavate earth, and perform other tasks essential to construction projects. With extensive training and expertise in equipment operation, Union Operating Engineers ensure efficiency, safety, and precision on job sites throughout Iowa. Their skills and dedication play a critical role in the successful completion of infrastructure projects and the continued development of our communities.

Apprenticeship

Local 150 offers four apprenticeship programs: Heavy Equipment Operator (OE), Heavy Equipment Repair Technician (HET), Geothermal/Well Driller (GWDO), and Construction Material Inspector (CBI). We are currently accepting applications for the HET, GWDO, and CBI programs. OE applications are available according to a schedule.

Union Painters and Drywall Finishers are skilled tradespeople responsible for preparing and finishing interior and exterior surfaces in construction projects. They work with a variety of materials, including paint, primer, drywall compound, and texture coatings, to achieve desired surface appearances and textures. Union Painters apply paint and coatings to walls, ceilings, and other surfaces using brushes, rollers, and spray equipment, while Drywall Finishers prepare drywall surfaces by taping, mudding, sanding, and texturing to create smooth, seamless finishes. They work closely with other trades to ensure that surfaces are properly prepared and finished according to project specifications and industry standards. With their expertise in surface preparation and finishing techniques, Union Painters and Drywall Finishers enhance the visual appeal and durability of buildings and structures.

Union Plasterers and Cement Masons are skilled tradespeople specializing in the application and finishing of plaster, stucco, concrete, and other cementitious materials in construction projects. They work on a variety of surfaces, including walls, ceilings, and floors, to create smooth, durable, and aesthetically pleasing finishes. Union Plasterers and Cement Masons use a combination of hand tools and mechanical equipment to mix, apply, and shape materials according to architectural plans and specifications. They are trained in various techniques, such as troweling, floating, and texturing, to achieve desired surface textures and appearances. With their expertise, Union Plasterers and Cement Masons contribute to the strength, durability, and visual appeal of buildings and structures.

Union Plumbers and Pipefitters interpret blueprints, follow building codes and regulations, and use specialized tools and equipment to complete their work safely and efficiently. They play a crucial role in ensuring the proper functioning of plumbing systems, including water supply, drainage, and sewage disposal, which are essential for the health, safety, and comfort of occupants. With their expertise, Union Plumbers and Pipefitters contribute to the construction, renovation, and maintenance of residential, commercial, and industrial properties.

Union Roofers and Waterproofers are skilled tradespeople specializing in the installation, maintenance, and repair of roofing and waterproofing systems in buildings and structures. They work with various materials, such as asphalt, shingles, tiles, and membranes, to create durable and weather-resistant roofs that protect buildings from the elements. Union Roofers install and repair roofs, including sloped, flat, and low-slope roofs, using techniques such as shingling, flashing, and sealing to ensure watertightness and longevity. Waterproofers apply coatings, membranes, and sealants to foundations, walls, and other surfaces to prevent water intrusion and moisture damage. With their expertise in roofing and waterproofing techniques, Union Roofers and Waterproofers play a crucial role in preserving the integrity and longevity of buildings.

Union Sheet Metal Workers are highly skilled tradespeople specializing in the fabrication, installation, and maintenance of sheet metal products and systems in construction projects. Union Sheet Metal Workers interpret blueprints and specifications, use precision cutting and forming techniques, and employ welding and soldering methods to assemble and install sheet metal components accurately and efficiently. They also perform maintenance and repair tasks to ensure the functionality and longevity of sheet metal systems. With their expertise in sheet metal fabrication and installation, Union Sheet Metal Workers contribute to the comfort, efficiency, and safety of buildings.
